Centers

Friday was the first full day for all of my students.  I started with 24 students this year and on Friday, they opened up a new classroom so I am now down to 19 students.  There was definitely a BIG difference in 19 compared to 24.  I really hated having to let go of those 5 students after spending time with them, but in the long run, it will be best for everyone.

I took the plunge and started centers Friday just to see how everything went.  I am eager to get started on my small groups and to do that, I have to get them running during center time.
I got this letter sort from a friend whom I use to work with.  I placed my magnetic letters on the copier and made a copy of them.  I put the letters in a baggy and the students just sort the letters.

 computer center

dry erase wring center (letters & name)

stamp center (they loved getting to use stamps)
I only had them practice the letters that we have been working on:
Aa
Bb
Cc
Dd
Ee

and our two words:
am
I

reading library

 abc center

 reading library

I have to give a big THANK YOU to one of my parents for bringing in a special snack for the students (I got one too!!!!). We got Sugar Shack doughnuts and juice drinks.  (cute napkins too)  Woo hoo!  Perfect for our first full day!

The Little School Bus

Our first story in the Scott Foresman Reading Street series was The Little School Bus.
This story has great characters who all get on the bus to ride to school.
goat in a coat
pig in a wig
fox in socks
quick, quick chick
hairy bear
squirmy worm
sleepy sheep

Each story we read also has a poem that goes with it.  We worked on "A Bus Comes Along Every Day".
Here is a picture of our classroom word wall.  The kids' names were added this past week along with our two new words:
am
I
Each story includes "Amazing Words" to build oral vocabulary.
Our amazing words were:
first
second
third
fourth
fifth
sixth
We also got started on our Math last week so I added a couple of pictures of what that looks like.   We will be working on "sorting" for the next week or two.  We talked about sorting by color, size, and shape.

First Day of school activity

I had my boys on the first day...all 15 of them!
I had tons of scrapbook paper at home from when I use to scrapbook but since I hadn't worked on one since I had Gavin, I thought I should put the paper to use.  I cut out all the parts and then let the students pick out what they wanted.  They glued them together and we displayed them in the hallway.
The girls came the next day and got to make theirs.

The boys were thrilled to see the sign on my door during their day...

but I think the girls were even more excited to know the boys weren't allowed on their day!

Getting ready for the first day!

Welcome to my Class!

I have taught school for 16 years, but this is my first year in kindergarten. I have taught 2nd, 5th, and 6th, but the majority of my teaching has been in 1st grade (12yrs). I was fortunate enough to become reading recovery trained the second year I taught first grade and I continued to teach Reading Recovery until this year. Our county decided to drop it because of funding:( My teaching career has had many changes in the past couple of years and I embraced the changes this year. I was given the opportunity to teach kindergarten and I can't tell you how excited I am. I feel that my 12 yrs in 1st grade along with my Reading Recovery training will be very helpful in teaching kindergarten and plus...I JUST LOVE THE LITTLE KIDDOS!

SO....

Welcome to my blog and let the journey of teaching 5 year olds begin!
